Living in Short Pump

Short Pump, VA Community

If you’ve spent at least one summer in Short Pump, you already know what’s coming. The Richmond-area humidity cranks up, your AC runs nonstop, and your Dominion Energy bill quietly creeps toward your car payment. Then winter rolls in, and your heating system picks up right where summer left off.

A few smart, targeted moves can keep your home comfortable year-round while actually trimming what you owe each month.

Stop Conditioning Air You’re Sending Outside

Before spending a single dollar on upgrades, check for air leaks. Gaps around windows, door frames, and exterior outlets silently drain your conditioned air all day long. Light a candle and hold it near window edges and door seals. If the flame flickers, you’ve found your culprit.

  • Weatherstripping on exterior doors is inexpensive, installs in under an hour, and pays back fast
  • Caulking around windows takes a weekend afternoon and delivers noticeable results
  • Spray foam in attic and crawlspace gaps handles the heavy lifting year-round

Dominion Energy offers instant rebates on spray foam insulation and other energy-efficient products through its online marketplace, so the sticker price is rarely what you actually pay.

Your Thermostat Is Leaving Money on the Table

A smart thermostat is one of the highest-return upgrades a Short Pump homeowner can make. Program it to ease off while you’re at work and ease back before you get home, and you’ll barely notice the comfort difference. Your bill will.

Dominion Energy offers instant rebates on eligible smart thermostats and runs a Smart Thermostat Rewards Program that credits your bill when you reduce usage during high-demand periods.

Speaking of practical ways to save around the house, I cover topics like this regularly. Check out my other articles for more tips on living smarter in Short Pump.

The Small Stuff That Actually Adds Up

Not every improvement requires a contractor. These low-effort changes are easy to start this week:

  • Switch to LED bulbs if you haven’t yet. They use up to 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs and last years longer
  • Unplug chargers and idle devices when not in use. Standby power draw, sometimes called “vampire load,” is a slow, steady drain on your bill
  • Run your dishwasher and laundry at night to take advantage of off-peak electricity pricing
  • Keep your HVAC filter clean. A clogged filter makes your system work harder, wear out faster, and cost more to run
  • Close west-facing blinds on hot afternoons to reduce solar heat gain and give your AC a break

Short Pump Homes and the Attic Problem

A lot of Short Pump homes were built during the housing boom of the 1990s and early 2000s. Many of them are under-insulated in the attic, where summer temperatures can push well past 130°F and radiate directly into your living space.

Adding attic insulation is one of the most cost-effective upgrades available and qualifies for the federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit, which covers 30% of eligible improvement costs. A home energy audit, which qualifies for up to a $150 federal tax credit on its own, can pinpoint exactly where your home is losing energy before you spend anything else.

If your HVAC system is more than 10 to 15 years old, it’s worth talking to a contractor about a heat pump upgrade. Dominion Energy offers rebates on air-source and mini-split heat pump installations for customers who heat with electric heat and complete an audit with a participating contractor. Rebates up to $400 are also available on eligible heat pump water heaters for qualifying customers.

Virginia has been allocated over $188 million in federal Home Energy Rebate Program funding, with the High Efficiency and Appliance Rebates program offering up to $14,000 per household for qualifying upgrades. The rollout timeline is still being finalized, so keep an eye on Virginia Energy for updates.

Start Here This Weekend

Book a home energy audit, tackle the air sealing yourself, and check Dominion’s rebate portal to see which upgrades you’re already eligible for. Your comfort stays the same. Your bill doesn’t.
